The OP didn’t state what his/her interest was, and no one asked, they just leaped in with opinions....

The 17-40 is built like a tank, it has good optics, constant aperture (albeit F4), 12 elements including 3 aspherical elements and a UD element. The 18-55 is all plastic, even the mount, variable aperture and 11 elements including one aspherical and one UD.

The 18-55 focuses closer, has IS (which is indispensable) and a wider zoom range, and you can probably destroy and buy a couple of 18-55's for the cost of repairing the 17-40.

Plus, the 18-55 is also smaller, lighter, less expensive, and most likely a sharper lens -- which are, not incidentally, the OP's objectives. The 18-55 has a little more CA, but that's correctable with software.

But I don't know why the OP's objectives should matter now because this thread is over 3 years old. It's now officially a waste of people's time.
