IS mode (+aperture)
2

#3 - this is really two questions: Does it hurt if you forget to turn IS off when using a tripod? Is there an advantage to using SIS-1 instead of SIS-Auto when you're shooting handheld and definitely not panning?

Second question first - here's a sequence varying FL at f5.6 & 1/30. It does appear that there may be an advantage to IS mode 1 at 300mm, though I'm not sure my sample's big enough to be sure. At 200mm, something very weird is happening. Both modes show diminished performance. I'm not sure why this is, but it appears in some other tests as well.

Is there any harm in leaving IS on auto when using a tripod? Actually, it appears to be a slight improvement.

The second image also shows the effect of aperture at 300mm. The sweet spot appears to be at f8, but the falloff on either side is minimal.
