85mm 1.8 and 50mm 1.4

I bought the Canon 85mm 1.8 when I bought my 6D a couple summers ago. I also currently have the plastic fantastic 50mm 1.8. Just recently, I've been taking more photos of friend's families, so I need a wider lens, but I'm finding the 50 1.8 just isn't really cutting it. Which makes sense because it's a cheap plastic lens. It gives decent results, but when comparing it to the 85, it's just not the same caliber. That's fine. Different price points.

My question is, is the 50mm 1.4 about the same quality as the 85? I don't have the money to do an L lens, it's not in the budget even a little bit. I'm working my way up slowly, so $350 is about the right price point considering I'm not charging people money at the moment, just learning.

Another thing I just noticed, and I could be way off base on this, is when I shrink down photos taken on the 85, very minimal loss of quality. Even posting them to Facebook (full res) I don't see much loss. The 50 on the other hand? Not so good. Is it just me, or is a lower quality lens going to affect things when reduced in size? Even when I upload them to Smugmug, it's really noticeable.
