I'm a lot like you in that I shoot a lot at the long end. I have the D750 with the 70-200 and prefer to shoot it most as well, but like you said, it does stand out. For the Fuji I have the 50-140, 100-400 (again, it stands out), and the 35 f/2. I like the 50-140 for the internal zoom so it doesn't stand out as much but it is high. I had the 90mm once, which I sold to get the other lenses but I miss it for its sharpness and bokeh. I just figured I didn't need it as much due to I was on the long end with the 50-140. I have pondered about the 18-135 and read all the reviews and I like the size, range (for all around zoom) but I don't know much about the image quality. I guess it's good enough but I do miss the images from the 90mm quite so. Also right now the 90 is only $50 more than the 18-135 at $750. So I personally will be going back with the 90 after lots of hard thinking. I would love to have them all, but one at a time is all I can do. The bank is broken and Fuji keeps bringing out the goods.
I was thinking about the 90mm f2 a lot as well. That would be 145mm equivalent and that would probably be long enough for me. Except when I'm at that end, I suspect I'll be going back and forth a lot; hence, I think the zoom would be more practical.
The other issue is that if I get the 90mm, then I still have to get another lens at the wide end for those times I want more than I can get out of my 23mm. Yes, I know I can move physically, but sometimes, you just can't. At the same time, I don't really want to invest in a wide only lens. I tend not to shoot at that end too much; just occasionally. So, I'm thinking an "all-in-one" would serve me the best for the best price.
Also, I recall way back in 2008 (!), I went to Italy and I brought along my D300 at that time and Nikon's 18-200mm f3.5-5.6. l used it a lot, and managed to get some fantastic images. The Fuji 18-135 is a little shorter but I'm guessing the build and image quality is better than Nikon's.
So basically, I want a Nikon D5 miniaturized into the size of a D5500, and DX lens that have the same IQ as their FX range. Not that I'm wedded to my Nikon out of patronage, but because I have so much invested into the system.
... probably not happening any time soon...
Hello Fuji!
Well, I bought the 90 today from a guy on craigslist who apparently just bought two Xpro 2's a 56, 90 and 35f/2. He was looking to sell all his Fuji gear he just bought but the local camera store would only give him $450 for the 90 since it was past the 14 day return window. I think it's on sale for 794.99 after 6% tax where i'm from. I got it from him for $700 so I was able to save 100$. I asked why he was selling them and why he bought two of them!! I think he mentioned the Fuji didn't tether well to his ipad like his two Canon 1dx's. He mentioned the files looked cartoony. Needless to say, I don't think he was hurting for money. What was a fashion photographer from NYC doing in Kentucky, well idk.
I was talking to a guy at the local camera store (a customer) who has a lot of equipment and he mentioned the 18-135 was an excellent all around zoom and he didn't think he would like it like most all around zooms. If I didn't want the 90, I would have gone with that for the same price. It was very very tempting to say the least.
I shot with a Nikon 18-300 a while back and liked it a lot for all around with the reach and it's speed kept up in low light when my old Fuji 55-200 (sometimes) did not. But the Fuji 55-200 impressed me that it kept up a lot for that lens and before the firmware 4.0. I could tell barely any difference, only slight sharpness of the 18-300 nikkor paired with the Df over that Fuji combo. But with each firmware update, the Fuji is getting there.
