The D300 was a good camera in 2007 when it was introduced and I know as I bought one and used it for several years. But a good camera in 2007 is a not a good camera in 2016 anymore than a circa 2007 laptop running Windows XP.

I disagree with this analogy and concept. Sure, a newer camera is going to be better in several ways than an older camera, but that doesn't mean the older camera won't still take great photos! This is a VERY different scenario than an older computer running older operating system software. That system may very well NOT run today's software, even if it were otherwise compatible to the OS, for a variety of reasons.

This is, in many ways, akin to the old cliche, "That's a nice camera! Bet you take great photos with it!" It also implies that since a D300 is an old camera, it can no longer function very well as a camera, which is patently false.

My choice would be the D5300 that has 24MP and built-in GPS and is selling at the bargain price of less than $500 brand new and with the full Nikon warranty.
