rate of in focus BIF

MF

I get about 30 % pictures in focus with 7d2 but that doesn't mean they are good pictures ; there are many other factors beyond the focus as already has been explained in the thread

exceptional pictures I get about 2% and National Geographic Magazine cover level 1%

at each frame you must have at least on point on the bird, otherwise the camera will lose the track

I post some pictures with another combo properly focused

water is a very trick background especially the ocean that has texture and therefore contrast and sometimes the camera focuses on waves with low flying birds like pelicans

I was shooting down from a boardwalk.
It was a lake not the ocean.

MF

posted is a typical busy background. The bird was very far also with very few pixels on it

Poor light (at noon), busy background, (choppy murky waters), low flying bird, few pixels on the bird, see the results below.

It is hard to see if it is tack sharp.

Is it?

I did the best I could

you can see the droplets dripping of the bird at 100 yards away. That is the limit for 7D2

Moral of the story: Never dare an old Greenlander.

Were you once stationed there?

Richard Sidey is one of my favorite wildlife photographers. I can only imagine what equipment and settings he used to capture this image.
