Monitor playback on a TV - a solution

Is there a fix to this problem? Happens all the time when panning.

I thought it was my tripod head.

Im shooting 4k Cinema at 24fps, and playing on a Macbook i7 with 2GB Video card.

yes I can give you a 100% fix ...though it's not a fix - as nothing is broken, it's just a mis-match of equipment.

The MacBook LCD display is refreshing at 60Hz, 24 into 60 doesn't go.

Hence the MacBook is having to make uneven duplications of the frames, something like 2:3:2:3:2:3 or 2:2:2:2:2:2:3

...the first adds to 5, 5 into 60 goes; the second adds to 15, 15 into 60 goes.  The 2 and then the 3 frame duplication is the judder.

If possible, export the file as a .mov, save to a USB flash-drive/memory key, then play on your TV.

Recent LCD TV's are designed to set their refresh rate to the incoming signal, whether 25fps, or 50fps UK/Europe broadcast, or 24fps blu-ray film.

On a TV you will see your footage perfectly smooth.

If you wish to seriously edit on your MacBook - hook a modern high-spec LCD TV up to it, and play-back on that.

It's nothing 'wrong' with the GH4 ...though having said that, the LCD monitor on the GH4 (and it's EVF) refresh at 30 or 60Hz - so they will also judder like hell when filming 24 or 25fps. This is something that must be addressed in the next iteration of the GH4, a film orientated inbuilt variable sync monitor, not just an off-the-peg 30/60hz panel.

Hope that helps
