If you could get the 18-105 VR or 18-55 lens with it, the D3300 is superior in every image quality related criteria, particularly low light performance, dynamic range, color depth and resolution. But as others wrote, it will not auto-focus your lenses. The D300 is well built and has a better autofocus system and works fine in good light, so a D300 will last a long time but so will any modern camera. My D90, with slightly better low light and DR than the D300 has been a rugged and abused workhorse with 200,000 frames but it does not get much use now except by my GF who prefers it over my D7000 and D800.
Given your preferred shooting subjects, if in good light, the D300 will do fine although it would not be taken with you as often because it is larger and heavier than D3300. I shot my D90 more simply because it was small enough and light enough to be with me much more often than my D800 with its 2.8 or 1.4  lenses. The D3300 is a great little walking around camera while the larger heavier cameras are more for when you go out intending to take serious shots for amateur or pro sessions.
