Hello everybody. I wanted to share one picture I took last night while driving. (I know I know)

I don't know how. Straight from the camera, no effect, no PP.

What you think?

You probably didn't need 1/1000 to stop motion, so you could get less noise with slower shutter speed. However it doesn't matter much here since entire image looks surreal and I like it. Who care if it has some noise? Did colors look that way or camera didn't get correct white balance?

Allowing your ISO to drift up without control can lead to huge noise problems. I sometimes do that when absolutely necessary, but it's a hassle getting control of the noise. I see your ISO is 25,600. You will notice LOTS of small black dots. Dead pixels from few to no photons hitting them.

While pressing the ISO button on the back, roll the front-right wheel one click either direction to set ISO Sensitivity Control to off. Then you da man in full charge of ISO.

In Adobe Camera Raw (ACR), you can dial down on this noise with the Luminance slider. Lost detail will always be lost, but at least you don't do additional damage through the Color Noise slider (can tone that down until the color speckles just barely are tamed).

There are several other noise reducing software packages that can be used (Topaz and DxO optics are good but cost extra).

In this particular case, the weather and the noise work together to give a somewhat surreal view. I would recommend raising the contrast, keeping the highlights somewhat lower than "pegged out" to make it look more moonlight (timer says about 3pm, but sun looks lots lower. have you set the clock?). A "midnight" filter might work well, but leaving the overall hue as a Sepia print might work well also.

The white balance looks like you might have selected fluorescent and shot daylight?

Glad you didn't get in a wreck. I'm sure there are not laws specifically prohibiting "photo and drive", but . . .

Apparently, a lot of people care about noise LOL

I was just testing what this camera (and the lens) can do in almost complete darkness.

It came out very surreal and I love it!

I like the picture. The noise kinda adds to the atmosphere of the scene, I look at it and am immediately thinking UFO.

That's what makes it so fantastic! ;)

It was 3 A.M. pretty dark and foggy and the car was moving, albeit relatively slowly.

LOL, I was thinking Stephen King's book sleeve. :)

Speaking of UFO... I'm not sure what this light in the sky is or where it comes from. Might be UFO as well. LOL

I really like the surreal effect you managed to get. When you edit it, I would suggest leveling the horizon (camera was not quite level - not surprising given you were driving at the time!), maybe removing the point of light coming through the tree on the left, and also consider taking out the one to the right of the sign as well.

I think you're right about the two lights, but when I attempted to straighten it up, the result wasn't so "punchy". I think the imperfection adds to its surrealism.

Great shot ! Don't alter a thing ! I like the tilt makes me feel I am going round that bend right now. If it were the other way it wouldn't work and the noise and bright spots just add to the eeriness. Just makes me feel the loneliness of night time driving. Might be fun to experiment with B & W or one of those boarders from MF or glass plates.

Looks like a wonderful night for a delicious roadside murder.

Really though, I like the image! You've given me some ideas to try out for using noise creatively.

Thanks for the post.

YES! Precisely! Thank you!

Thank you and you're welcome. ;)

My first thought was Bac'n Cheddar deluxe. Extra sauce. ;-)

I am taking a composition course and one of the first exercises we did was break every rule we ever learned with the camera (hold steady, horizontal to the ground, low ISO, etc). It's meant to stretch your boundaries, and find your vision for photography.

With this photo, I think you did just that and were rewarded. Enjoy.

Wow, well done, such a surreal scene, and an oil painting comes to mind.

Sometimes we just get lucky ;-)

Keeping it light and simple.

Thank you. It means a lot.
