Canon SL1 vs SX230 Dilema

Planning a driving trip to Alaska this summer. Want memorable scenery, wildlife and family pictures during our trip. Wondering if it would be a waste of money to invest $500 for a refurb SL1, 18-55 and 55-250 STM kit lenses. I am mainly interested in improved picture quality that might be available from the DSLR.

I already have the SX230 and am reasonably happy with the picture quality and convenience of it always being available on my belt (which will be there on this trip regardless). I'm a point and shoot guy and the SL1 is not intended to be an entry level camera to learn to become a photographer (too old, no artistic genes and not enough patience to try that again)!

So...anybody want to hazard a guess? Will I be so thrilled with an SL1 kit PQ that I'll stay up every night taking sunset pics at 2am, or should I rather stick with what I have and continue my relationship with Paint Shop Pro?
