Camera gear on Virgin Australia?

I am flying to Canberra for work next month, from the US. I am flying with United, on big planes the whole trip, except the last leg from Sydney to Canberra in on a Virgin Australia "non jet aircraft." Looking at the Virgin site, they have a weight limit of 7 Kg for carry on bags, and I'm sure that this "non jet aircraft" has smaller overhead bins. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who's flown on Virgin Australia non-jet airplanes. Do they enforce the 7Kg limit? What happens if one of your carry on bags (backpack plus laptop bag) is over that limit or too big for the overhead?

Even without camera gear, carrying the valuable/fragile equipment I need for my work means I normally have a fairly heavy laptop bag and a big backpack (one intended for a 17" laptop). I'm worried about this on the Virgin flight, plus I'd like to take some personal camera gear.
