So I'm about to trade up from a lengthy engagement with the Sony APS-C to full frame. The price of admittance to full frame Sony E has made me decide to go DSLR.

I've been on the verge of pulling the trigger for the Nikon D750 but I keep coming back to the Pentax K-1 for the price point, sensor, rugged body, and other features.

I don't shoot a lot of sports... I DO shoot a lot of portraits/events. I don't have to have the 172 lenses offered by CaNikon.. but I do have 4 specifics I need.

What are my AUTOFOCUS options for?

1. 85mm 1.4 ....will the sigma work?

2. 24-70mm 2.8

3. 70-200 2.8

4. Some focal length of wide angle zoom.. could be 2.8 or even 4.0.

Are there sharp autofocus options for Pentax FF? I'm confused by what will/won't work on the K-1.

Thanks to any and all who help guide a Pentax newb!

Yes, there is a Sigma 85 1.4 in Pentax mount info http://www.pentaxforums.com/reviews/sigma-85mm-f14-hsm/review.html
2. 24-70mm 2.8
Pentax 24-70/2,8
3. 70-200 2.8
Pentax 70-200/2,8 - will be available soon.
4. Some focal length of wide angle zoom.. could be 2.8 or even 4.0.
Pentax 15-30/2,8

The FA lenses such as 31, 43, 77 are made for FF, and many of the DA primes works also (meaning they cover the full area of the sensor). Please have a look in the forum.

Welcome and enjoy!

A serious thank you for the info!

All we keep hearing is that this is Pentax's first FF digital, yet I see Sigma makes their capable 24-70mm f/2.8 IF EX DG HSM AF in a Pentax mount.

I've used that on a Nikon in the past and it's acceptable (especially given the $).

Have people simply been using these FF lenses on APS-C bodies up to now?

Thanks for bearing with some us trying to learn... from the outside looking in, the Pentax lens selection for FF is complicated!

We suspect one of the 5 DFA new primes in 2017 (lens road map) will be either 85 f/1.4 or 135 f/2. Until then I would use the Samyang or Rokinon 85 f/1.4 and learn CIF (Catch In-Focus) or focus peaking, myself. Or the excellent FA 77 f/1.8 limited if you don't mind screw drive AF.
2. 24-70mm 2.8
The new Pentax DFA 24-70 f/2.8 has you covered here and likely be better than the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8.
3. 70-200 2.8
The new Pentax DFA* 70-200 f/2.8 is a pro-grade lens, but unfortunately, costs like a Canon lens in this class.
4. Some focal length of wide angle zoom.. could be 2.8 or even 4.0.
I'm strongly considering the DFA 15-30 f/2.8 for this or one could delve into legacy glass for 20, 18 or 15mm primes from back in the day. Also on the 2017 road map is a new ultra-wide prime I think.

Any KAF mount works back into film days.

Many people have used legacy Pentax FF lenses on other FF camera with an adapter, mostly Sony A7

Go to PentaxForums for details on almost all K-mount lenses ever made, whether Pentax or third party:

All K mount lenses will work on Pentax K1 (no adapter needed).

Pentax APS-C lenses are named DA. Some may cover the FF, but other will only deliver good IQ in crop mode.

When a DA lens is mounted on K1, the user may choose to work in crop mode, which then will show a LCD frame in the OVF and save only the APS-C 14MP center part of the sensor, or in FF and reframe later in PP (which may be useful with some DA lenses).

All other Pentax lenses are FF.

All film era lenses were full frame:
  • K and M lenses will work only in manual mode, manual focus;when pressing the green button, the camera will briefly close the aperture ring to set the shutter speed to the exposure in accordance with the aperture set on lens.
  • A lenses will work in all auto modes but manual focus only
  • F and FA lenses will work in all auto modes and AF modes via a screwdriven gear
D-FA are recent lenses optimized for digital cameras.

Hi JBigham,

85mm Sigma:

the Sigma 1.4/85 will work, I suppose

The Samyang 1.4/85 is an option is AF is not mandantory

24-70 3rd Party Options:

Sigma 2.8/24-70 HSM

Sigma 2.8/24-70 non-HSM (optically not as good)

Tamron 2.8/28-75

70-200 3rd Party Options

Tamron 2.8/70-200

Sigma 2.8/70-200 HSM (used only)

Sigma 2.8/70-200 OS (used only ???)

Wide Angle Zoom:

Here is the problem, this was partially discussed here http://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/57369338

For the moment, the Samyang 2.8/14 or 1.4/24 are the options. The Sigma 12-24 could be your choice, if you find one.

Have a nice day

Albert

I'm (probably) getting the K-1, because it suits my shooting style. Compared to the D750, the Pentax will deliver higher resolution images (especially with pixel-shift) and so will make a better landscape camera and perhaps be better for portraits as well. However, the Nikon will almost certainly have superior AF, and this will make it a better event camera. It also has a much larger selection of fast glass, useful for interior events and weddings, especially fast wide-angle lenses that are in short supply for the Pentax. So ultimately you have to decide what kind of photography is a priority; if I was shooting events and weddings for a living, I would almost certainly go for the D750.

Pentax has announced a 18-35mm f2.8 zoom that should be released this year to fit the K1 for wide angle shooting:

15-30mm f/2.8!
Yes, 15-30, sorry for the mistake which is obvious in the link itself.

Which means very wide, on par with competition (It is said to be a rebadged Tamron lens with Pentax coatings, weather resistance and no in-lens stabilization).

Yes, it was obvious.

I've wondered how to fit a filter to that lens. There is a special Lee adapter for the Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8. That would enable the Lee SW-150 series filters to be used.

http://srb-photographic.co.uk/tamron-15-30mm-mark-ii-adaptor-9724-p.asp

I asked SRB, a well known UK maker and supplier of all sorts of goodies, including adapters, (see link above), if the adapter would fit the Pentax version. They don't know (yet). They said:

Hi Barry

The Lee SW-150 adaptor is designed to go on each lens petal hood individually.

I am certain they have not yet designed one for this lens, though im pretty sure they will in the near future.

I would assume that the Tamron 15-30 adaptor will not fit, but until I get one in my hand cant say for certain.

The MKII SW 150 holder will almost certainly work, all it will need is the adaptor.

Another solution would be to send me the lens, and we could make the Pentax adaptor to take a SW 150 filter holder for you.

Hope this helps

Regards

Terry
