I replaced the 24-120 that came with my D750 with a used 24-70 f/2.8G.  The 24-120 was acceptably sharp and had good color and contrast, but the 24-70 is significantly better, to the point that the first time my girlfriend saw a photo taken with it, she commented that it was really sharp.

I have read that there may be some sample variation.

The one downside is that the 24-70 is long enough that if it is mounted on the camera, the combination takes up all the room in the camera bag.  Any other lenses that I want to take have to go in another bag (the exception is the tiny 16mm fisheye).  The good news is that when de-mounted the 24-70 can sit vertically in a pocket in the camera bag.
