First SLR for a dad. Flipping between T5I/SL1 and.....

I know this group is asked this numerous times so I will be brief.

I own a Panasonic LX7. I am quite happy with it. Only real complaint is indoor low light could be better. I will keep it as the travel or generally all around camera.

I am looking to take the SLR plunge.

I am a pretty good photographer, but can and would like to learn more.

WHAT I AM LOOKING FOR

I am a dad looking take pictures of family, kids, events, etc.

These can be portrait style, posed shots, portraits and spontaneous shots (taking pics of kids are a challenge)

Mostly indoors, some outdoors

I am good at adjusting settings and angles, but I don’t have time for much post processing

There will be some videos as well. The LX7 takes very good video (I do know about Nikon’s autofocus noise and I think I will be fine with it with manual focus)

I live in an area without any real good camera shop (B&H or Adorama from NYC) I can go to Best Buy to give them a trial run and see how they feel.

I found a D5500 refurb kit at the top of my budget $500 even.

I know Canon makes great cameras and lenses.

I have seen examples of auto focus noise on Nikon videos and how much better Canon STM lenses are.

I have also seen live exposure preview that works on the Canon as well. These are nice plusses, but I still think the D5500 edges out by a bit.

I have researched the SL1, T5i and the T6i. (I think the T6i is out of my price budget)

Looking for Canon owner opinions why I should go with Canon?
