The longer the lens the shorter the apparent depth of field. The larger the maximum aperture the more background blurring from the reduction in DOF. The lenses that provide the most control are the two DC lenses in 105mm and 135mm focal length. One of my favorite landscape lenses is the 70-200mm f2.8 and I am not alone in that regard.

The 3 focal lengths mentioned have different picture angles and differing amounts of image distortion. Just as lenses that are longer than normal provide image compression and make backgrounds look closer to the objects in the foreground, so too a shorter than "normal" focal length will increase the apparent distances and shrink objects in the background - turning mountains into molehills.
