There is a distinct difference at the widest apertures (1.4 and 2.0). The new II version has no chromatic aberration and is distinctly sharper. By f2.8 the difference is slight and at f4.0 there is no difference.

However, in practice the differences are quite subtle. There are various comparisons between the two lenses on this site that are worth looking at. I think you will agree that comparing them requires a lot of back and forth.

Because the differences are subtle and because I already own the older version and would have to take a huge hit selling it used, I decided to keep it. Here are a few pictures shot with the original 35mm f1.4 wide open. You can decide whether the results are noticeably inferior.
