To be honest, I prefer the 25mm to the 20mm on an absolute basis. It's a better lens in most regards and I sold my 20mm and kept the 25mm.

However, as a two lens kit, 25 and 45 is not very versatile. 25mm is not wide at all. It's a stock normal prime. And the 45mm is not a very long telephoto, it's really just a step out of normal territory. So when you own both (as I do) you end up using them for somewhat similar kinds of photos. As a 2 lens kit, I think the classic 35/85 equivalent is quite ideal. And you are right about there with 17/45 or 20/45. I would take a long look at the 17mm f1.8 or the 20mm f1.7. I think the wider focal length and better AF engine of the 17mm is more appealing, but the 20mm has sharper edges and is more compact. Either one would do nicely paired with the 45mm.

Personally, I use 15/45 as a travel pair and use the 25mm as a single lens solution closer to home. I find 25mm ideal for family snaps and indoor portraits, but I don't find it versatile for travel. It is not wide enough to take in the scenery, nor long enough to isolate details. I think you want something a little wide for travel.

I might just pick up the 17mm 1.8 and not tell the GF till we already on vacation lol. yeah the more I think about it the more I'm leaning to the 17mm 1.8.
