Hi Mikan
Nice fotos with the G9x -I'm kinda late to the discussion but I'd like to hear your comments.
I own a NEX6 and an S90. And when I look at your A6000 comparison fotos with the G9x frankly I don't see a whole lot of difference. That is my experience too with my Nex6/s90 models. I actually enjoy my s90 very much and keep coming back to it due to several reasons.
- Canon jpg SOOC colors are more to my liking at default settings - Sony just seems "colder" especially with skin tones.
- Nex6 needs much more menu diving to get to the settings I want
- Biggest bugbear: the Sony LCD screen display is much smaller to the s90 due to the perspective ratios and with the s90 it is very accurate and bigger rendition of my final photo. With the Sony I can never really see final result accurately in the sense whether it is slightly under or overexposed. Also the Sony LCD is very very hard to see in bright outdoors light when I have to resort to the EVF whereas the Canon LCD will keep on perform even in a lower brightness setting on the camera and WYSIWYG. Canon LCD screen is a much better display in terms of size, clarity, visibility and accurate rendition of the final jpeg.
- Nex6 hunts quite a bit in its autofocus with the 16-50kit lens (so can the s90 but its a much older DIGIC software- in comparison I also have an IXUS 125HS- albeit a much smaller sensor but newer DIGIC nails it everytime) - again this is irrelevant in your situation due to the superlative A6000 AF.
I think under low ISO and bright light conditions the Canon powershots compacts really hold themselves very well. There's not a whole lot to it when comparing to the A6000/nex6 jpgs to the G9x/s90
I somehow find my Nex 6 jpgs being much more contrasty/vivid(both cameras being in default base settings) which in comparison makes the Canon bring out a more pleasing and detailed dynamic range. ( i know that sounds strange perhaps I'm not describing it adequately)
Ultimately of course the SONY pics win out after all it has the bigger sensor APSC if one was to pixel peep and once the ISO climbs SONY wins hands down.
But for a compact and ability to get closer macro shots(without having to change lenses and just fun in the shooting I still actually prefer my s90. I hope to upgrade to a G5x as I reckon it has all the necessary control dials right at my fingertips not forgetting that touchscreen and EVF
Hi yodalah! I used to own an S90 as well. I'd say the 1 inch sensor is a HUGE improvement to the S series. Although I don't know much about G5X, people on the forum seems to like it a lot, and you'll probably be very pleased with it. But if you already have NEX6, why would you want to get a new camera that's almost as bulky? Is it for a better usability, although it has a smaller sensor? Or are you NOT planning to keep both NEX6 and G5X? I think A6000 and G9X are a perfect combo, considering their IQs and sizes. If you are planning to keep your NEX6, you might want to consider a smaller camera, like G7X or G9X, although they do not have EVF. Or the RX100 M3 or 4?
Yes its from a usability aspect. I want an upgrade over my s90 for higher ISO/IQ and faster focus (the older gen.DIGIC AF lock on the s90 was getting to me) within a reasonably compact camera over loss of pocketability.
For me the G5x is the most likeable choice with its EVF and the extra dials (no more menu digging).
It seems to be embodiment of a miniature SLR that I would WANT to carry around. (except for the sensor size albeit slower AF) ; also the wide aperture thruout the zoom range (- the Nex 16-50 kit lens was just too slow and impossible to do anything closeup) My NEX ended up ridiculouslyramping up the ISO much faster than even the s90 (f/2.0)
RX100 M3/4 just doesn't have the functionality of extra direct access controls nor touchscreen focus, and I hate the fiddly tunnel vision push/pull pop up EVF (almost seems like an afterthought). I don't feel SONY has the ergonomic handling of 'everything right at my fingertips' user experience despite its amazing IQ plus I believe its image stabilization is not as good as Canon's. Sony's myriad menu options still feels like a computer rather than a logical photographer's tool setup like Canon.
Now I just have to wait for the price of the G5x to drop
