Re: Considering a used G12. Want comments.

I can't comment on the G12.

However, I had an XZ-1 and now I have a Pentax MX-1. (same lens, different body & controls)

Bob, this lens is fantastic. It's the best lens I've ever used in a fixed lens zoom camera, by a mile. I just purchased a Canon G9X online (haven't received it yet) and although its sensor is double the size of the MX-1's the image quality is the same. (Presumably because of the inferior lens)

Now the G12 doesn't have a subcompact lens, so this may not be an issue. But I think it DOES use a small sensor, by today's standards for G-series cameras.

I'd pass on a G12, and hold out for something with a great lens (ala XZ-2) AND a larger sensor. (at least 1")

Something along the line of a G1X.

Otherwise, you're not really getting a notable improvement. The XZ-2 can be set up so the rear dial changes shutter speed and the front dial controls the aperture. Or in A or S modes, the front dial changes the aperture or shutter speed, while the rear dial does exposure compensation. That seems like a pretty reasonable amount of manual control, no?
