Gave up waiting for the SX60 to come down in price
Feb 11, 2016
... and I pulled the trigger on the Nikon Coolpix P900 just in time for our upcoming cruise.
I've always been a Canon Powershot user (SX2, 20, 40...) but it's been almost a year and a half since it's release and the SX60 hasn't really come down in price in Canada, and as we all know, hasn't received the most glowing reviews. P900 users seem to be much happier with their camera, and it has some extra features that I'd probably make use of. I never did find a cheap SX50 here, and even if I did, I had decided I wanted the wifi option so had ruled that one out.
Amazon had a good supply of the P900s in stock for not *that* much more, so I took the plunge and it should be here Monday. We'll be leaving on a Caribbean cruise in three weeks, so that gives me enough time to test it out and see how I like it, and enough time to return it if it comes to that.
I'm still torn on which to take on the cruise because the SX40 is getting replaced this year, one way or another, so maybe it's safer just to take it on the cruise and then I don't really need to worry if anything happens to it. But, we're regular European travellers, not tropical destination people, so this photo opportunity will be a rare one for us. With all the sunlight and colours available to us, I have a chance to get some really nice looking pictures, and part of me thinks that it would be a shame not to be able to zoom in on some really unique (to us in Canada) birds, architecture and features.
My SX40 is just getting a little too noticeably sluggish, and every now and then some photos are getting corrupted. I use the swivel LCD 100% of the time for taking photos, and it's getting increasingly difficult to see in the sunlight. I've played around with a friend's SX60 and actually did like using it, but it's possible I'll like the P900 enough to justify spending a little more money. We'll soon find out!
