For my upcoming trip to Ngorongoro and Masai Mara, I am wondering whether anyone has any experience shooting wildlife or just plain shooting with the combination of Canon 7D Mark II and Canon 400 f2.8 II. Thanks
That is a very nice lens, but it is a tripod (or monopod) lens at 8.5 pounds. I'm sure it will do nicely with extenders as 400mm can be very limiting for wildlife. With F2.8, using the 2X extender will still get you all of your focus points. I'm sure the image quality is superb. It's a great sports lens.
For wildlife, I personally prefer to be as mobile as possible, so I picked up a 400 DO ii and I also use the 500 F4 ii which is still light enough to carry and do some hand holding. The 400 DO ii is very portable, hand holdable and with a 1.4 iii on a 7D2 will get you out to 896mm... 640mm without.
I'm sure the 400 F2.8 ii is a wonderful lens, but I would not want to be tied down to a mono pod or tripod unless I was using a 600mm... or longer.
Amazing lens but indeed, too heavy when you're a moving wildlife photographer.
Would love to have it, just to look at itÂ
