I thought I wanted a GX8. I've tried two different camera stores for trade in values. Both have too many already. The local camera store is selling them for $300, so the trade in offered was $150.

I guess it makes more sense to buck up an buy a GX8 outright rather than bother with a trade.

If you want a good M4/3 camera, a used GX7 might be a good choice! Kenmore Camera (near Seattle) has one for $270!

Looking on eBay, a bunch have sold recently in the $330 to $360 range. If you want the convenience of trading it in to a retailer, of course you won't get anything close to that.

Your thread could more accurately be titled, "Trade-in value of used three-year-old camera only a fraction of its price when first released." Nothing unique about the GX7 in this respect. Heck, you can buy a NEW Oly E-M5 for $379 at B&H.

Look on the bright side.

I bought a couple of EM5 bodies for €350 a shot to avoid lens changing with my 3 main lenses.

The image quality is still as good from a practical point of view as the current models that sell for €1000+

Think buying film when buying a digital camera.

Hi Bill

I started getting rid of older equipment on e-bay last year. You'll do better than trade in and as long as your honest there is not likely to be any problems. Takes some time running to the post office, otherwise it's fine.

Speaking for myself and I believe most everyone who is committed enough to photography to participate in this forum, once you've gone to the point of really contemplating acquiring new gear, you might as well go ahead and get in done. You won't be satisfied with holding on to what you have.

I try not to confuse market value with utility value. It can get rather depressing except when you have the utility value mindset.

While innovation is still happening, it has plateaued. Today's headline grabber will be tomorrow's bargain. I purchased a GX8 last November but kept the GX7. While the GX8 is more fun for me to shoot with; I am also perfectly happy with the GX7. The GX7 will soldier on as great back-up.It's utility value to me is worth far more than what I can get for it on the secondary market.

I cannot wait until the GH5 and EM-1 mkII start grabbing the headlines. This is when GH4's and EM-1s will be available for a fraction of their original price.

Do I suffer from GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome). Not really. I just know that when I buy 'new' that I am paying a premium to have the latest and greatest for about 6-12 months.

Great point! Buying cameras is an unrecoverable expense rather than an investing in an asset.

Even though I have and use my GX8 most of the times, my GF1 still does come out to play every now and again... In good light, GF1 is still a great smallish camera...

Hang on to that GX7 as a backup for the GX8. That is what I have done and it works just fine.

Welcome to the modern consumer orientated society. It's not just cameras affected, but pretty much everything. Cars, motorcycles, TV's, computers, clothing, the works. The responsibility really lays with you, to not get caught up in all the marketing and advertising hype, & buy what you need. Not what the machine tells you you "need" If you have plenty of disposable income, go for your life. If not, like most of us, enjoy what you have, and don't get caught up in wishing your life away

Hi

I always trade or sell outright when changing camera bodies. I recently sold my two EM10's when upgrading to an EM1 and EM10 mkII. The first EM10 I siold on ebay, and the second one I traded against a secondhand 12-40 lens, so it worked out quite OK. The EM1 I bought secondhand, so that is insulated somewhat against future value.

The EM10 mkII I just had to have so I was fine with paying the premium to have one now. I love using it so am very happy.

What you are really saying is that the GX7 has little trade-in value.

Not at all the same thing as being worthless.

I just did the same thing, buying two used GX7s for $350 each to go along side my first one. Now I can shoot events with three fast primes. Gotta love it.

A camera is worthless when it stops making photos.

To IR. I may do that with my em5 down the road....
