They certaily can equal your Sony.  Try a Canon G5 from the same vintage.

The problem is your lack of understanding of factory defaults, how they differ, and what to do about it.  Defaults being the way the camera is set in the menu when it arrives, straight out of the box.  Sony's, especially back then bumped up contrast, color saturation, and sharpening to make images look sharper and make them jump off the screen.  With newer cameras, Canon uses softer default settings so the images don't have the "pop" of the Sony.  Learn how to best set your Canon's - they all have suitable internal adjustments, and you'll find the same kind of sharpness and color.
