Great post. I've got lots of FD glass in various states of 'repair' - I've found them mechanically over-complicated compared to lenses of a similar age from other manufacturers which always makes them more of a challenge to work on and repair. Once forgotten due to the register problems which made them incompatible with EF bodies they are now seeing a resurgence due to their adaptability to mount on mirrorless cameras. Some lenses are very good ( the 24mm 2.8 being one of them) but you have to be prepared do some DIY on them like this to get the focus ring to feel nice without backlash.

Glad to see someone else post with experience.  Yes, it is just so easy to get them clocked wrong.  If that happens (as you know) the lens will not seat properly at either end of the focus setting.  On the 85mm 1.2L the rear lens group can be damaged by not clocking it properly as it will crush into the rear lens cover.  If anyone reading this is planning on tackling any L glass I'd suggest gaining much experience with less expensive lenses first. The L series are much more difficult to repair.

On another note, the EF stuff appears to be much easier to repair.  My experience however limited has been that the newer lenses are more straight forward.  Just have to be careful not to damage circuit boards, gears and ribbons.
