What am I doing wrong with the focus?

I wanted to take a street portrait today. I've never done that before. It's not a good photo in terms of composition etc. but I'll work on them. The combo is 100D + 85mm 1.8.

He was looking the other way. I focused on his head, recomposed and took the shot as soon as he turned and looked at me. It was f/1.8 and one shot af mode. He was approximately 5 meters (16 feet) away from me. Dof should be around 20cm (8 inches). I don't think it is a dof issue. Nothing is in focus as you can see. What can be the problem?

Canon EOS Rebel SL1 (EOS 100D)
