That's a good demonstration Nigel; it's the reason why I had to pass on the G9X (also afflicted by softness issues), and am advocating for a 1" mono- or bi-focal shirt pocketable camera which would be derivated from the Sony, Canon or Fuji compact line-up.

With such a design choice, there'd be less optical compromises thus less softness degrading the pictures.

The Ricoh GRs will give you a pocketable aps-c sensor and a very nice 20mm f2.8 lens. Fuji just announced a competitor as well with the sensor from the x100 which I imagine will produce good IQ. Both are pretty similar in size to the g7x/rx100s, so you do have some options.
