The Ferrari of lenses, dubbed by a review I read online that turned out to be true (unfortunately).
Sounds like you bought the Ferrari and not sure what to do with it, so return is a good solution, let those who knows go enjoy it, LOL.
No, I don't feel walking around with the 85L is " too scared", no different than walking around with any lens, it's even shorter than the 70-200, I use this all the time when shooting porttrait, even just a casual portrait with friends at the park, beach, on the normal city street all the time, people just walk right by us, normally pay more attention to the girl I am shooting and don't even look at the camera and lens, I don't see what's the the big deal, just another lens that mounted on the camera and takes picture. I am shooting with 1-series and don't feel the so call "extra attention", we see 1-series out there everywhere, also not that heavy either if you have the right strap, try a Black Rapid type of shoulder strap instead of the neck strap, you will find all of a sudden the lens very light and don't feel much walking all day with it, which I do it all the time.
Yes, focus can be slow, but very accurate, I use it all the time, no problem shooting F1.2, I am not normally shooting at its minimum focusing distance, so no issue with too thin of DOF, I bought the F1.2 lens because i want to use F1.2, I didn't discover I have a thin DOF after i saw the picture.
As for 135L may serve you better, that's the question only you can answer, 85+135L is my default portrait kit, I won't replace one with another, it's two different focal length. no, 85L is not for bragging right if you ask me, I am not doing commercial for Canon so I have no incentive to show off Canon can make a F1.2 lens, however i do have incentive to spend my money on this lens so I can get picture with the look I can get from this lens though, if you can't then there is no point to keep it, simple as that, or keep it in a glass box to show off as you said that's what the intend was by Canon.
