How do you know he bought it blindly without any knowledge about it?

He may have tried it out in store first.

One has to assume, that he was (is) an experienced DSLR user:

"I sold all my Nikon gear a couple of years ago - based around the excellent camera the D300."

Knowledge about a camera means information, from every available source, not a short try in the store. Especially not, if one has very specific requirements ("size, fast auto-focus, capability for tracking moving subjects"). The best sources are mostly experience-reports from current users. In most cases is the User-Guide already available at the manufacturers home-page before a camera is available in the stores.

All his trouble was therefore foreseeable:

"It´s too small, and I find the controls counterintuitive. Autofocus is really terrible, and it takes too long to adjust the point of focus, I´ve missed so many shots. And it can´t be used for moving subjects at all."

O.k. I'm willing to replace "nonsense" by "naivety".
