Just saw a thread by someone asking if Canon would address the DR gap with the 5DIV and I thought.... hmmm. What brand specific issue works brand evangelists up into the worst frenzy?

Nikon and Fuji just took away some good ones (D300s successor and "new" sensor), but there are still some "sensitive" topics out there people can't seem to move on from :-D

Just saw another nice one in another thread: "small sensors don't have a DOF advantage for close-up and macro photography".

I don't know about the 5D forum, but the Rebel forum and 7D forum have all but closed down due to this issue. Than fanboys are extremely vocal. They deny any reviews or data that indicate Canon is behind in sensor development. If that does not work, they claim that more DR is absolutely useless and results in poor photographic results. If that does not work, they get nasty. When they get nasty, the DPR moderators close the thread instead of taking action against the fanboys. A few years ago those were helpful and active forums. Now they are only a place for newcomers to ask a few questions. No serious discussions are possible.

You know what gets the m43 people riled up? EQUIVALENCE talks and sensor size matters and talk about FULL FRAME.

Because sensor size does matter :)

ITS NOT THE SIZE OF THE SENSOR, ITS WHAT YOU DO WITH IT

If i had a bucket of m43 sensors, I would pour molten metal on it. No one should ever go through life using those inferior sensors. :o

In spite of whining by DPR measurbators, most professional photographers use Canon DSLRs, and produce excellent results with them. But yes, Canon seems to be the brunt of most bashing here. Canon has sold more ILCs than any other company, for twelve straight years, and in any industry, the market leader causes a lot of jealousy.

Which camera takes the best cat photos that's an inflammatory topic if I ever heard one.

I should start a poll because what this forum needs is more discussion about which brand/sensor takes the best cat photos.

And before someone questions my credentials on cat photography, I do have lots of cat pictures on Facebook so I am an expert.

Then they argue that it's impossible to use HDR techniques to pull up the midrange on
an image that has been underexposed to preserve more highlights without it becoming
psychedelic. Its as if HDR has two settings, off and horrible which it can be when badly
executed.

The Fujifilm forum brings up the same old battles every week or two...
  • ISO vs the rest of the world
  • X-Trans vs. the rest of the world
  • Fuji / Lightroom vs. the rest of the world
None of these have been laid to rest after zillions of posts...and probably never will. Too many entrenched positions.

Interestingly the Sony A-mount forum is very docile at the moment...and (shock) they even help each other :-O !! Can't be a good omen for the future...

idk ive seen some pretty bad arguements on equivelance

It's hard to believe there's a topic more explosive than Canon and DR.

But, it's also hard to believe that some people think a sensor that is about 1/4 the size of another is equally good at all tasks (and even better at others). If that's true, it should work in all scenarios, right? So if a FF sensor (A) is no better than a m4/3 sensor (B) and a sensor that is 1/4 the size of m4/3 (C) should be as good as m4/3. Then A = B and B = C, therefore A = C, ad infinitum.

Now, for some uses and standards (social media or texting a friend, anyone?), sure, any sensor will do. But that doesn't make them equal or as good or as some proclaim, even better.

So I guess if m4/3 folks REALLY do believe that sensor is just as good as FF, then yeah I can accept that the sensor arguments on that forum as more venomous than the Canon DR topic. And here's the funny thing... Canon can (theoretically) improve DR. m4/3 will always be smaller. There's no changing that.

finally someone put all these people in their place! thanks!

My vote goes to m4/3 and equivalence. Every single lens or camera release for Micro 4/3 causes waves of trolls swarming into that forum and article's comment section to lay their profound wisdom on the filthy unwashed masses of small sensor users. To my surprise, the absurdity of some claims in such flame wars reached such a level that some of those actually became quite entertaining again. I've learned a lot from the announcement of that Olympus 300mm lens. Funny stuff :-D

But what about "ISO cheating" by Fuji? I'm not a Fuji user and I've seen that being argued about. Sound like a perfect inflammatory topic.

And what about EOS M bashing? Or do everyone just accept that it sucks, so bashing it can't be inflammatory? Or is it no longer a laughing stock of mirrorless world? I remember times when bashing it was trendy, so I figure it might still be the inflammatory topic.
