Although I do like the camera and wish I had it, most reviews are not in favor of it. The Luminous Landscape is actually the only favorable review, as far as I am aware. Yes it has a great sensor and lens, but there also the well known shortcomings that are hunting this product.
I would be very curious to see the actual sales of the G3X vs FZ1000 and RX10-2. I am afraid that they will be even less than those from the more expensive RX10 II, judging at least from the number of reviews in Amazon.com and other similar sites. And usually when sales of a product are not the expected/forecathested then its future is also at stake. On the contrary, Canon saw that the G7X did have a sales success and maybe that is why they invested more in this size by introducing two new products (G5X, G9X).
I too wanted to buy the Canon G3 X but when I tried it at the B&H store to zoom in on some dimly lit empty shelves (they were moving departments around) it hesitated and took a while (2, 3 seconds) I had my Sony HX 90V bought months earlier and focused on the same spot at approximately the same image size on the screen, it instantly locked on. I tried again with the Canon same result. I went back 2 months later to give it another try ... same result. I was ready to buy the G3/X with its bigger sensor (compared to the Sony HX90v) and its seal against the environment and good zoom range. But I just could not, the G3/X just did not focus well in low light (for me)
I have a Canon Powershot S100 bought in 2012 which had given me a lot of trouble focusing in low light and had to send back for repairs under warranty to Canon 3 times and was quite concerned about it happening in other Canon cameras. I was happy with the shots when they came out but I like to shoot in low light mostly without a tripod and for me a camera is useless if it cannot take the picture I want in low light before the moment passes by ...
