I currently have a Canon Rebel T3i with the kit lens and a Canon 85mm F/1.8. The 85mm is very limiting and is not ideal for street photography and landscape shots that I'd like to take in Paris. I'm looking for a lens that is affordable (about under $600), great for travel, and captures good quality pictures. Right now, I'm really interested in buying the Canon 35mm f/2 lens, but I am not sure if using a prime lens is a good idea for this trip. I really appreciate any advice that is given.

I have a T5i with the 18-135mm STM kit lens, and I was happy with it. In Paris it seems that you can find yourself in many different settings within just a few minutes walk -- wide open spaces along the Seine, narrow lanes, looking up at details on the buildings, etc. That lens will do just fine for most scenarios, and if you are doing most of your shooting during the day, the aperture range should be OK. It has image stabilization which is nice, and it handles video quite well, too.

The key question now is, can we all go with you?
