How much to zoom to determine if picture is sharp

Hi,

I have a Canon SL1 and I usually take JPG pictures. The pictures look sharp when not zoomed in the computer. But when I start zooming, I feel the pictures are not sharp enough. How much should I zoom to determine if a picture is sharp or not before running into pixel size and lens related limitations? I usually use the kit 18-55mm STM or 40mm F2.8 lenses. I don't want to over zoom and think the picture is not sharp and throw away a perfectly good picture.

Thanks in advance,

Jai
