wide angle benefits the least from IS. Optically they are excellent even wide open which is unusual at that price point. Combined with IS they become very flexible.

I bought the 28mm f2.8 IS just to try it and the price was $340 at the time. I don't feel I have compromised on the optical quality whatsoever just the aperture, but the IS is quite the consolation prize. Most people will never tell the difference between this and the latest high priced L lens. If you can live without f1.4 (really T1.7) you just saved a lot of money!

I bought the 28 IS initially and wound up returning it to buy the Tokina 16-28 as I found I don't really use 28mm very much.  It was an amazing lens though.
