Canon T6s single-point AF not working... or is it?

I just purchased a Canon T6s and I'm not sure if I am setting up single-point AF or Zone AF properly. Here are my tests.

I am in Manual - One Shot mode.

Single-point test

step 1: select the point on the far right side

step 2: press the camera button and go back to image

step 3: press shutter halfway down.

Result: Green boxes show up in the LCD that are nowhere near the far right side of frame.

Zone AF test

step 1: select the zone on the far right side

step 2: press the camera button and go back to image

step 3: press shutter halfway down.

Result: Once again green boxes show up in the LCD that are nowhere near the far right side of the frame.

Am I not setting this up correctly?  If green squares are the focus boxes why don't they show up on the point or zone that I picked?  Thanks so much in advance!  This is my first DSLR so I'm a noob.
