No one is claiming extenders are the best of the best but this guy gets great results.

Everything in photography is a trade off. The extender route will give you a great f2.8 70-200 and an acceptable extra reach when you need it at reasonable on cost. You say yourself that this is your preferred shooting range anyway. If you want to keep your f4 and get a 100-400 go for that.

Just be aware that using an extender does not lead to rubbish shots. That aspect is in your control.

I'm not advocating one over the other but you should consider all the options.

I used the other brand 70-200 2.8 plus X2 extender for years and was pleased with the results.

Your call entirely.
