I'd like to move from Canon to Nikon for a small project. The D3200 with the 24MPx Sony sensor would be fine, but the bracketing function is crippled by Nikon.

Are there firmware hacks for Nikon available to reactivate the bracketing function on the D3200?

I do not know of any firmware hacks, but:

Put the camera on a tripod to get pixel over pixel layer alignment, take a laptop and implement either exposure bracketing or focus bracketing

If you want a more portable solution to provide automated exposure only bracketing:

Use an Arduino microcontroller and bulb release to step through a series of increased time exposures.
