Thanks Guy I got it to work! I also finally found the Levels option- I had to scroll down. Everything is set to ON now except something called "contact box" (whatever that is)
I think you may mean "light box", it's a means of showing images side by side.
which is greyed out. I have a question about the zebra stripes, I see the blue and red shading in live view and then I take the picture and in playback the blue isn't as extensive as it was in live view....is this normal? So basically, if I have a picture with a lot of shadow area and about 1/3 of it is blue in live view, once I take the image and the playback image appears, only a small piece of that is actually in blue (maybe less than 1/10th.) Are the playback zebra stripes more accurate than the live view one or vice versa?
The live display is a quick and dirty approximation of your jpeg settings, the real shot as taken is a bit better, the raw file is even better again, usually has no blown RGGB channels even if some highlights show on jpeg review.
Okay I'll turn that off and the NF too. I was worried about the WB, my images seem a bit too warm.
Yes, Keep Warm seems to do that from what I've heard, out of the box I turn if off and have never used it.
Ha when I first saw FB I thought the images on there were just thumbnails and I was shocked when I clicked on them there was nothing bigger than that.
Yes, Farcebook is all about information mining of the people using it, images are not serious for them.
Oh so the IS could actually be causing the blur! Should I leave it off or only have it on in one direction (horizontally I suppose?) Also, did you put antishock on 1/8th sec or some other setting?
If the shutter speed is "safe" or on a tripod always leave the 2 axis IBIS off. Also carefully pixel peep the blur, if it seems to be a distinct near vertical displacement on bright edges then it is shutter shock. IBIS blur is just a slight softening, a bit like a very slight misfocus.
I put the camera in S-AF+MF and have magnified live view on, I assume this will magnify the point of focus just like it does on my E-520?
Yes, magnify up to 14x. When touch AF is enabled, touch the screen or Magnify button to get a box on the LCD, then touch the right side of the LCD to get the slider to change the size.
I seem to use S-AF mostly and then for MF (rare) I click the focus ring on my 12-40/2.8
I left the AEL/AFL thing at default settings I believe it is set to Mode 1/Mode 2/Mode 1
Just for kicks I checked mine and I seem to have it at 2/2/1 and another at 2/2/3 but not always sure why I did that and when, just habit mostly.
Guy I followed the website and downloaded this and ran it
http://oup.olympus-imaging.com/ou1download/index/
But I had the problems I told you about in the other response, it said there is a sharing violation in the temp bin file and canceled the update after it reached 100% I tried this several times always the same result. I left the memory card out during the update and had the camera in storage mode. Should I use OV3 would that work even if the above update program failed?
OV3 calls the same Updater program, when OV3 installs the Updater is installed with it. Memory card in or out has never made a difference for me. It must be some XP compatibility problem.
Well when I touch any part of the LCD the camera focuses there and instantly shoots, so the touch screen must be on but when I press down on the part of the screen labeled 33 above, nothing happens.
If the feature is active, the icon should be there, try the Info button and cycle to when it appears is my first guess.
How do you get the vertical slider to appear on the screen, do you need to press the icon indicated by 33? I also have Face Focusing turned on, maybe that is interfering- should I turn it off?
With touch AF on as soon as the screen is touched the focus box stays there, the slider appears on the right to adjust the size.
Face recognition does not interfere on my E-PL5, the icon is always there on the left to cycle though the choices. Again, use the Info button.
The levels thing finally works- Thanks Guy! Now I just need to resolve this firmware issue (I wonder if OV3 will do it where the Digital Camera Updater thing failed- is OV3 compatible with XP SP3- not sure if XP was responsible for the sharing violation error I had with the Updater in the temp bin file.)
Long time since I've had XP in the house, I guess OV3 moved on and now is a problem with XP? No, that's wrong as XP SP3 is listed as compatible on the download page. I've never seen that error but for the last many years it has been Vista/7/8/8.1/ and now all 4 are on 10.
Googling around it seems the latest Service Packs helped fix that problem, so SP3 should be good. Maybe check if all Windows uodates actually were done, it may show some missed ones or errors when trying to install.
Just got the firmware issue and the touch screen focusing issue to resolve now! Good idea about the aspect ratio, I shall try that! When you recover 4:3 from the RAW file does it give you the full 16 MP of the sensor?
The raw file always contains the whole 4:3 image at 16MP, even though you may shoot say 16:9 small sized jpegs. The camera settings are in the raw file so OV3 and one or two other raw converters can reproduce the jpeg as intended.
