Is not a "bit" better it's much better. I had both for a while and even with the 1.4 it is STILL better than the 400mm including better CA correction.
There is is sort of Urban Legend that the 400 should have been called L glass and I believed it myself until I got the 300mm and got a reality check.
If you have compared them both and didnt notice a big difference your copy of the 300mm must have been subpar.

The 2x is when you really start noticing the degraded IQ but still quite usable in my opinion.

300mm with 2x. At the distance I shot DOF was razor thin but I mostly got the eye.
