USB and battery pack all the way. It charges my phone, camera and mp3 player. For me, this is a significant draw for this camera (G9X). Small, light, good Wi-Fi and smartphone interface and USB charging.
As i mentioned, Good to have a choice. In your case out backpacking the clear choice is the USB charger.
In that case though, is he really bringing USB battery packs that last 5-10 days?
depends though, you can charge the USB battery unit during the day using a small solar charger on your backpack.
that way you can charge whatever device needs it most after the sun goes down.
