For more on this see a long thread titled "Camera or card to tablet, possible?" The file manager I ultimately used the most is called ES File Explorer. It allowed me to easily select a subset of the images on a card for copying, if I had previously copied some of them. I liked the interface of FX better but never figured out how to easily copy just a portion of the files. The My Files app that comes on the tablet isn't bad either.

I have the standard android My Files file manager, which is actually pretty good, and one called OI File Manager that a lot of people recommended. I don't like that one all that much. Problem with hard drives  is that Windows uses one format and Mac another. Plus you have Fat32 which is an older standard that everyone should recognize including Android devices, but reality is not always the same. I can get a 128GB Samsung jumpdrive for $40, a 256GB Samsung pocket sized SSD drive for $100, or 1TB and up pocket sized HDD drives from $60 to $100. Since I can't imagine needing more than $128GB and the Samsung has both a microUSB and USB 3.0 connecter, it sounds like the winner.
