Struggling with video quality on EOS 700D

Hi everybody,

I had a 700D for Christmas, and as you may guess, I'm fairly new to this stuff. Photos are going just fine and while I'm certainly no expert I'm getting some decent results both from the automatic and manual modes.

Video however I'm struggling with, no matter what resolution or setting I use I'm getting blocky, grainy video, with a lot of compression artefacts. I've tried the automatic settings, auto focus, manual focus, even reading up on manual settings to get the best out of the camera and setting a lower ISO manually and trying a range of shutter speeds. But no matter what I try it seems that videos taken with my Google Nexus 5 smartphone look significantly better.

If I take a video in my back garden, there are jagged edges along all the fence panels, and tree branches against the sky are just a mess of blocky, mis-coloured noise.

I've uploaded a short sample to Google Drive so you can see what I mean:

Is there anything obvious I could be doing wrong? Or does anybody have any suggestions for me?

Thanks all,

Myx
