I would have to install a firmware update in order to have the automatic shut off of the lcd, I believe.
I got used to using the button to switch between the eye and lcd viewers on my vf2, so I didn't install the firmware update.
I find the eye sensor on my new em10 II to be so sensitive that sometimes it's a pain in the neck!

I don't think the eye sensor of the VF4 is ever intended to work on the E-PL5 - however, it DOES work on the E-PL6 (albeit slightly slowly) - it's one of the differentiators between the two models. There was a firmware update for the E-PL5 and the VF4, but that was just to get it to work as before the update you simply couldn't use the VF4 at all.
The VF4 works with my e-pl5s with Firmware 1.2 in them - never updated.
That's because v1.2 was the release that gave VF4 support - mine came with 1.1, which didn't.
For the record, for anybody wondering, the VF4 definitely won't use its eye sensor on the E-PL5, even with the most up-to-date firmware (same also applies to its junior sibling, the E-PM2, of course, since they launched together). And I distinctly remember having to update from v1.1 because the VF4 remained dark, even when using the manual EVF button on it to attempt to get an EVF image. It's true, as Michael Meissner mentions, that the earlier models in the range, even after updates, couldn't actually use the full resolution of the VF4, even though they would work with it, post-update. I must carefully compare the E-PL5 and 6's performance with the VF4 against a later model to see if they are included in that category (will report back later...!). Seems reasonable to assume the E-PL5 and E-PM2 probably do, since they considerably predate the VF4, but the E-PL6 originally launched (in Japan) on the same date as the E-P5, which was intended to be paired with the VF4.
