The VF4 works with my e-pl5s with Firmware 1.2 in them - never updated.

The 1.2 firmware on the E-PL5 added support for the VF-4. Olympus E-PL5 firmware revisions

In terms of E-PL5 and VF-4 compatibility, I don't know. I have not had either the E-PL5 nor the VF-4. I recall that on the older bodies, they could not use all of the resolution of the VF-4, and that the VF-4's eyesight sensor only worked on select bodies.

When I talked about the eyesight sensor, it was with the Stylus-1 and E-M5 mark I that both have integrated EVF's. I did wind up using the VF-2 once on the E-M5 mark I when the integrated EVF failed on a trip, and I happened to have the VF-2 in my bag.

The VF4 is an improvement because:

1:  It has a lock on it to keep it on the accessory show

2:  The focus remains fixed and doesn't change when you jostle the eyepiece.  (I have the accessory rubber eyecup on it.

3:  It's easier to see the entire image in the VH4 viewfinder. (I wear eyeglasses)
