help, poor T3i autofocus performance

This is my first DSLR with the 18-55mm lens that came with the kit, but in about 3k pictures that I've taken with it so far, I am disappointed by how many of them come out blurry compared to my ancient PowerShot A630... that camera beats this one so much with the autofocus, I don't get it. I don't know if I'm doing something wrong or the autofocus is terrible. Much worse in low light obviously, but too much errors in daylight too compared to PowerShot A630.

I'll explain an example: I was taking a bunch of test portraits of a person indoors in low but not very low lightning, 4.5 feet away at 18mm, 1/50-1/80 shutter, f3.5-f4.5, flash, ISO 400. I put the focus point on the eyes to focus, the flash fires a few times to focus, yet about 1/4 photos would come out sharp. I went up as high as 1/100 shutter and f4.5 but still very high blur rate.
