Have a look at these and see if it makes sense:

70-300:

70-200/2.8L IS II

100-400L II:

Note the distance between the back of the lens and the rear lens element. Also note that the Canon extenders protrude inside the lens:

Thanks a lot, I only have 70-300 f4-5.6 IS USM, which is never going to accommodate those extenders. I will have to wait till I get a 100-400 f4-5.6L IS USM.
