Thanks Ted,

For me the issue is specifically about how the TIF which viewed fine while worked on in ACR then views with the problem after exporting from ACR as a JPG and, yes, the JPG encoding was at Max 12. The issue is slightly better if I export in sRGB than Adobe RGB. Perhaps I should try working in sRGB colour space throughout rather than Adobe RGB?

I would be inclined to give it a try.

If you want to play with the X3F could you PM me and I'll send you a link.

OK

Downloaded. So far I haven't managed to put my finger on it precisely.

I have established that there is little to no discoloration in the four following:

SPP in sRGB working space and saved at quality 12

SPP in ProPhot working space and saved as sRGB at quality 12

FastStone Viewer, embedded JPEG saved at the very best possible JPEG quality 4:4:4 and least possible compression.

SPP saved as TIFF.

Voila:

view original to see file titles

However, a couple of conversions based on DCraw look absolutely horrible:

RawTherapee and RawDigger

I use SPP 5.5.3 and sRGB working space. RawTherapee 4.2.222 uses ProPhoto working space as default; and the current profile for Merrill images is not the best I've seen. If I tell it 'no profile' the discoloration disappears but the saturation gets reduced a lot.

This is an interim report, I'm off to compare JPEG performance to see what that throws up.
