A7 Shoots smaller files than Canon 60D?

So I noticed that my file sizes and dimensions are larger on my older Canon 60D than on my newer Sony A7. Both cameras were shooting RAW.

Have I messed something up in settings?

Or is this just the way it is?

Input is appreciated.

Thanks.

Looks like your camera is set to crop mode. Dimensions should be 6000x4000 with a file size up around 25mb

How sink adjust that? Is that aspect ratio? I was shooting 16:9 but I changed to 3:2 a little while ago.

It could also be a result of the "compressed RAW" used by the first generation A7 cameras.

So I poked around and under APS-C it did indeed seem to be set to crop. No idea why but hopefully that will solve the issue. Thanks

In the menu it is name APSC size capture. You need to turn this off. Unless of course you are using an APSC lens.

Thats because the Sony E 50mm is an APSC lens not designed for the full frame sensor in the A7 series. That is why the camera would have automatically set itself to APSC mode. No much you can do about it with this lens unfortunately.

Damn, I didn't realize this wasn't a full frame lens. It's new to me.
One of the strange annoyances about lens selection - there is no native 50mm FF lens. The closest is the Zeiss 55/1.8 at $700.

The Canon EF50/1.8 family of lenses on an EF-to-E adapter will have FF coverage, but poor AF on the A7.

And now I have a circular vignette :(
I'm using a 50mm Sony E lens
If you purchased that lens recently you may be able to get a refund, explaining that you didn't realize it was an APSc lens.

If that's the only lens you have, then go ahead and use it in crop mode until you are able to get a full frame lens to use.

As I recollect, Sony designed the only 50mm F/1.8 lens that doesn't cover full frame.
Pentax SMC 50mm f1.8.
Nope. Covers full frame, as does the 35mm F/2.4
Well there you go, all the information I can see for it, even DP reviews own article says its an APSC lens. Seems it covers more.

To be fair the Sony SEL 50mm f1.8 was designed for the original NEX system which was APSC only. I guess they didn't envisage at the time the direction E mount would go with FF.

The 50mm f1.8 will work fine on the A7 albeit with reduced resolution. The OSS may also not work on the A7, I know it doesn't with the SEL18-55 fitted to the A7.

Pentax was lazy and gave a bunch of lenses DA designators despite them covering FF with their image circle. A number of the long primes also had perfectly fine FF coverage but were labeled as DA*
