I purchased a new 35-100 several months ago and expected it to be soft at the long end wide open, but to my pleasant surprise it was actually pretty sharp in the center. Must be sample variation or a silent upgrade. The extreme sides and corners never get very sharp even when stopped down, but this is a characteristic that is very similar with its sister the 12-35 - consistent sharpness in the center throughout the zoom range, with a compromise at the borders.

The Olympus PRO lenses, on the other hand, are designed for extra reach and edge-to-edge sharpness, but at sizes and weights approaching APS-C 2.8 lenses.
