Perfect replacement for my Panasonic LX7
5

I wanted a fixed lens camera with a built in EVF, hot shoe, 1"+ sensor, decent aperture (f/2.8 and wider), and 4x+ zoom rage. If you use camera feature search on dpreview, you will quickly find that there are only two cameras that match the requirements: Panasonic LX100 (successor to LX7) and Canon G5 X.

I won't comment on the LX100 since I don't have one but I heard it's a worthy successor to my trusty LX7 with a faster equivalent aperture than the G5 X. However I wanted greater zoom range and I already had a perfect compact flash for the camera (Canon 270EX II) so I went with Canon G5 X instead.

First lets get the bad things out of the way:

  • This camera has a tiny battery - I couldn't believe how small it was. On the upside, it has USB cable charging which works great if you carry a USB battery pack around for your smart phone anyway.
  • Canon couldn't defy law of physics. This camera probably should have been a 28-100mm instead of 24-100mm. The extreme fish eye correction on the wide end results in soft corners. Some, including dpreivew, also noticed de-centering but I haven't seen this myself. On the upside, mid and tele range of the zoom range has sublime optics.
  • This camera is no speed demon. Burst shooting is poky @ 1fps in raw. However the camera does feel responsive in other ways such as AF lock speed (even in dim conditions), camera on to picture ready time, etc. Again, this is contrast detection technology and I haven't seen any CDAF that's good enough to replace my 7D. Use the camera for scenarios which it excels in and you'll be fine. Don't expect it to replace your DSLR for everything.

Now on to the good parts:

  • All the intuitive user controls where Canon excels has been maintained. It has lots of buttons and dials and each has been placed perfectly for rapid change in settings. This aspect is often overlooked but it's the main reason why I stay away from Sony cameras. The layout makes the camera fun to use and that leads to more pictures being taken.
  • G5 X combines the best of two companies: Canon for the body and Sony for the sensor. It's common knowledge that Sony is few years ahead of other companies in terms of sensor technologies. Sure the advantage is gone at higher ISOs but for landscape shots, I do appreciate the increased dynamic range and low noise level in the shadows.
  • Picture quality is amazing. Again it has Sony sensor inside but Canon colours which many including myself prefer.  I love using this camera for portraits.
  • G5 X's EVF is fantastic with 2M+ pixel density. They have come a long way from the EVF that's in my Canon SX50. I use the EVF about 90% of the time and the swivel display panel (also fantastic) 10% of the time when I need to camera to be very low or very high.

In conclusion, this is a solid camera.  I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this camera to anyone who prefers Canon layout and colours.  You'll be disappointed if you expect this camera to completely replace your DSLR but if you use it for scenarios which it excels in, you won't be disappointed.
