Those 16MP sensors from Panasonic exhibit really high levels of dark current, and that's probably the reason they do not have a real Bulb mode. GX8 does not have this problem. It can make 30 minute exposures, and behaves very well at long exposures. The only other Panasonic cameras that can handle long exposures well are GH3 and GH4.

Can you point me to where I can see a comparison please? This is very interesting - long exposure noise is definitely not a strong point of my GX7 / GM1 combo.

No direct comparison, but the guys at Lenstip analyse dark frames in their camera reviews. The thing is, they do not publish those in English. You can try google translate, here's a link for GX8, G7 and G6 reviews. They analyse darks in the last subsection. Also note that most Panasonic cameras are limited to 128 second exposures (G7 included), hence my assumption that those models can't really handle that well (otherwise Panasonic would not put the limit in). And because of this, the numbers in those reviews I linked to are not directly comparable between GX8 and G6/G7, as they normally take 3 minute exposures for the dark frames they analyse. But you can compare G6 with G7, as both were done at 128 sec exposures. And it shows that G7 is better than G6, but not as much as GX8.
